It is a story that does not end happy as several people, each with their own dreams and desires, clash on personal, legal and social grounds. It is a modern
novel, set at the end of the 20th century, and a novel that offers the reader many different possible themes or points of interest. There is the struggle for foundation
and identity in the characters, there is the struggle find a place where one belongs, and there is the desire to succeed or possess, both symbolically and realistically. It is,
as stated, a very powerful novel without a happy ending. The following paper presents a tutorial review of the work. House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus
In first reviewing the work, as suggested by the student, it is important to perhaps first present the primary characters. These characters are primarily Behrani and Kathy, although there is
also Kathys lover who is a police officer. The police officer, however, may simply serve as a tool for Kathy in her character and be of little or no significance.
The student may choose, though, to argue how this character is the darker side of human nature, how he facilitates what Kathy wants, and how he culminates the entire plot.
In relationship to Kathy, it would be important to discuss her alcoholism and perhaps her past with her ex-husband whose delinquent taxes causes her problems. Kathy is obviously a
relatively normal woman it seems, wanting her house and wanting to escape in many ways. Though the student could also discuss how her alcoholism keeps her from really pursuing a
