Sand is a strange, lyrical, almost silent film that uses the visual medium to a tremendous extent; that is, the director composes his shots to take advantage of the fact
that he is photographing things, not writing about them. The story opens in 1910 with a "sorry caravan slogging through the sands of Brazils Maranh?o state, a vast plain of
dunes on the northeast coast" (Shaw, 2006). The caravan is buffeted by high winds and has to slog through blowing sand, which despite the fact that it is white and
soft also gets into everything; the people of the caravan, not to mention their animals, have a rough time of it (Shaw, 2006). They are in the middle of this
desolate and isolated region when Vasco (Ruy Guerra) announces that this is his dream, "the land newly deeded to him" (Shaw, 2006). Vasco, who is "unsympathetic and probably mad,"
is married to Aurea (Fernanda Torres) who is much younger than he is; a city girl who has no idea how to make a home in such a wilderness (Shaw,
2006). In addition, she is pregnant (Shaw, 2006). Also in the party is Aureas mother, Do?a Maria (Fernanda Montenegro), who in real life is Torres mother; Do?a Maria is a
frail woman but apparently stronger of character than her daughter. Since they are going to live in the wilderness, she decides to make the best of it while her daughter
continues to long for a way to return to the city (Shaw, 2006). Soon after they arrive, all the workers disappear with the food and the pack mules; not
