Rwandan government. The massacre occurred between two tribes, the Tutsis and the Hutus. As the killing raged, a hotel manager, Paul Rusesabagina, saved the lives of 1200 members of the
Tutsi tribe. The film Hotel Rwanda (2004, directed by Terry George) chronicles what occurred. The following examination of the movie considers Rusesabaginas actions during the genocide from the perspective of
servant leadership, arguing that he exemplified the qualities of a servant leader during this crisis. However, first of all, this perspective requires defining what is meant by the term "servant
leadership." Servant Leadership Brian Hall refers to values as the "building blocks of human nature," indicating more specifically that "words (meanings), reflect
significant concepts that underlie all human decisions and actions" (Horseman, 2009, p. 1). Halls model of development follows the standard framework of viewing life in terms of "childhood, young adult,
adulthood and the age of wisdom" (Horseman, 2009, p. 1). Hall proposes that each of these stages and their associated worldviews has its own set of values, reflecting seven different
styles of leadership (Horseman, 2009). The vast majority of leadership fall into two major categories: "automatic task centered (Theory X) and the
relational participative (Theory Y) styles" (Horseman, 2009, p. 3). Halls theory is more complicated, as he describes leadership development as progressing as people age through "four distinct phases of consciousness
development and seven styles of leadership" (Horseman, 2009, p. 3). As an individual progresses through the four stages, at each level, there is a reintegration of values that accompanies
