for the Paperstore, Inc., March 2001 Introduction At the corner of rue des Francs ourgeois and rue de S?vign? is the admirable Hotel Carnavalet. As in many old
records there is dispute whether it was built 1544 or 1548. Records list the house as being built from the designs of Pierre Lescot and Jean de Bullant,
and has been credited with being one of the oldest Renaissance buildings in Paris. We also have records that it was "rebuilt" in 1660 by Francois Mansart (1598 1666)
of the Beaux Arts School of Architecture in Paris. Mansart known for an elegant and simple style, also revived as classic style of roof design known as "the
Mansard." From this picture we can see the Mansard roof on each side of the Hotel Carnavelet. And it would appear that the Hotel itself has the same type of
roof as well. The idea that this is a mansard roof would fit with the architects preference in using it, plus the fact that he was to increase the
space of the building, and the advantage of this particular design is, as we can see from our drawing is that additional living space could be added in what had
once been only attic. In trying to put the building and renovation dates together it looks as though the building was first constructed as a hotel; documents describe its
odd placement angle, which we can see in our photo. It became a private residence in 1578, was inhabited by the widow of Mr. Kerneveney whose name was
