This paper provides some information about the chair including a bit of history; the difference between "figuratively expressive" and "formally expressive" styles; the four elements of the chair; the differences between Egyptian, Greek and Roman chairs; the symbolism of the chair; and how chairs inform space. The Chair Chairs are absolutely necessary: "Since the beginning of civilization humans have required something to sit on - and as societies evolve, so does the chair" (Fiell and Fiell, 2002, p. 7). It is, more than any other type of furniture, a "barometer of social change" (Fiell and Fiell, 2002, p. 8). This is because it is always necessary, and therefore always present, but although the function remains constant the design changes; and in those changes we can see societys changes as well. For instance, when times are difficult, chairs tend to be plain and utilitarian; when times become more prosperous, the chairs that are produced become more decorative and feature ornamental embellishments that do not improve their function (Fiell and Fiell, 2002) "Figuratively Expressive" and "Formally Expressive" Styles Its been impossible to find these terms exactly as given, so well use what we know of the language to figure it out. We speak of something being figurative, not literal; as in "its just a figure of speech." We also say things are formal, not informal. If we apply these terms to furniture design, what happens? A figuratively expressive chair might be one that suggests its function but does not display it directly; a formally expressive chair is clear as to its function. A throne might be formally expressive while a club chair could be figuratively expressive.
