furniture, a "barometer of social change" (Fiell and Fiell, 2002, p. 8). This is because it is always necessary, and therefore always present, but although the function remains constant the
design changes; and in those changes we can see societys changes as well. For instance, when times are difficult, chairs tend to be plain and utilitarian; when times become more
