Internships are generally scheduled while students are still taking classes although there are some that may be required after all course work has been completed. Internships may be paid or unpaid. More often, they are unpaid (SmartPros, 2010). If the individual is paid, the pay is generally much lower than the salary for that position. Many college degrees require internships as part of the program. For instance, most states required teacher candidates to participate in student teaching which is like an internship. Individuals in medical school must fulfill both an internship and a residency. Journalism programs require their students to participate in an internship with a newspaper or some other media (SmartPros, 2010). Communication majors become interns in a mass media venue. Hospitality programs require students to fulfill an internship. Many college students look for internships when they are not required for the degree or certificate. College students seek internships even when they are not required because the experience gives them an edge in getting a job or in gaining admission to graduate and post-graduate university programs. One college career director commented that a good GPA just isnt good enough anymore because there are so many candidates with high GPAs (Burnsed, 2010). Candidates for post-graduate degrees need more than that to stand out from the crowd. Employers agree. An internship gives the candidate an edge. In fact, an internship gives the candidate such an advantage that some colleges are requiring internships for all programs (Burnsed, 2010). Colleges typically form partnerships with local businesses when they require internships. This is a lot easier for smaller colleges because they have fewer students to place in an internship (Burnsed, 2010).
