following review of literature focuses on the role of hospital social workers, which encompasses helping to plan for the needs of patients when they are discharged from hospital care, arranging
for home services, or working on "interdisciplinary teams that evaluate certain kinds of patients (BLS, 2008). The hospital environment and organizational culture is undoubtedly on the most stressful practice
settings for social work practice as this involves "high-volume and high-acuity caseloads, quick patient turnaround (leaving little time for intervention and planning)," as well as the factor that social work
is frequently devalued and challenged within the framework of the medical model (Badger, Royse and Craig, 2008, p. 63). As this statement suggests, traditionally, social work, as practiced within hospital
settings, has been shaped and influenced by the hierarchical and bureaucratic management structures of these institutions (Globerman, White and McDonald, 2002; Globerman and Bogo, 2002). Today, healthcare systems are
evolving, but literature on hospital social work practice indicates that the social work system, its "theories, ecological perspectives and values that emphasize negotiation, empowerment and respect for autonomy," is also
evolving to meet the needs of contemporary society (Globerman, White and McDonald, 2002, p. 274). For example, the Department of Social Work at Toronto General Hospital aided in restructuring that
facility by introducing cost-efficient initiatives for that institutions cardiac program (Kohm, Pollinger and Sheriff, 2000). A growing focus on market-driven cost-containment strategies over the last two decades has
