care. It is a dilemma in the United States, a dilemma in the true sense of the word in that there is just no win-win solution. When we consider the
issue of pharmacies in hospitals, we must think about the purpose and objectives of this entity. As Scott (2009) said, one of the major goals is to improve patient safety.
Yet, while this is the goal, hospital pharmacies have been faced with decreased funding (ASHP, 2009). These challenges are not confined to any one country, they are global. Matsoso (2009)
reports the same kinds of challenges across the world in Africa, Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States, among other countries. The hospital pharmacy is a subsystem in
hospital services (Matsoso, 2009). Even though it is an integral subsystem, it has faced serious cuts in personnel and services in this recession. A survey by the American Society of
Health-System Pharmacists found that 37 percent of hospital pharmacies had their budgets cut in the previous six months, about two-thirds had to reduce their drug budgets; and more than 20
percent were not filling vacant positions (ASHP, 2009). One of the important measures of the effectiveness of hospital pharmacies in terms of overall hospital operations is the reduction in
