(GAMC) in Glendale, California is expanding its physical capacity in response to the needs of the community and to the increased use of the hospital over the past several years.
GAMC has been serving 80 - 100 more patients each day than it did only four years ago (Campus Expansion, n.d.), and indications are that utilization need will only
increase in the future. The population of the city is growing, as are average incomes. As the population ages, GAMC can expect greater demand for services from the
community. Doubtless these considerations contributed to the hospitals current expansion program. The program will affect several areas of operation and management, including
staffing, finances, technological advances and communication with the local community. Staff Levels By 2005 one of the local universities reported that "concentrations of
younger people are located in the Northeast Valley communities while relative concentrations of older residents are found in Glendale and southern and western Valley communities" (Social Statistics, n.d.; p. 66).
Burbank seemed to be attracting middle-aged residents. The increase in physical capacity of the hospital expansion alone would create a need for
additional staffing, but that; expansion of the Emergency Department; and changes in local demographics all point to greater staffing needs. Older people generally place greater demand on health care
providing facilities, and GAMC already has experienced significant increase in demand (Campus Expansion, n.d.). Human Resource Management and Development Given the ongoing nursing
