about their impending hospital stay and we all know how anxiety can worsen any condition. Furthermore, hospital personnel are human, just as the patient, and humans make mistakes, even doctors.
The resentment and anger of patients and their families is clearly observed in the number of malpractice lawsuits but, for any rational thinking person, too many of these lawsuits should
never be filed. This essay will first report the data on three specific issues: rates of infection, rates of pressure ulcers and rates of complications. It will then discuss
what certain states have done in terms of hospital transparency and disclosure requirements. Auer (2006) reported that more than five percent of people who go into the hospital leave "with
an illness they didnt check in with." The bacteria responsible for these illnesses get "into the body through surgical incisions, IV lines, catheters and dirty hands and sink faucets" (Auer,
2006). The patients new illness include things like "pneumonia and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus" (Auer, 2006; also see Cukan, 2006). Cukan (2006) reported that "finding out the infection rate of a
hospital is not exactly easy, and in some cases impossible." This would suggest that Auers (2006) reported average of five percent may be a very low estimate. The Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention report that these infections and illnesses kill about 90,000 people each year (Auer, 2006; Cukan, 2006). Some of these illnesses begin with internal symptoms like
