The purpose of the midwife is to deliver the baby as well as guide the pregnant women throughout the entire course of her pregnancy, which culminates with (typically) a home
birth. However, while there are many advantages to giving birth at home there are also some disadvantages. In order to understand this matter more fully, it is important
to understand the benefits of midwifery and to also understand the drawbacks of such a service. What is Midwifery? "As historians have
noted, midwifery has been characterized as a social role throughout recorded history, regardless of culture or time" (The History of Midwifery, 2002). Even the Bible has references to midwifery
as well as being referenced in other ancient records (The History of Midwifery, 2002). The word "midwife" translates to "with woman", and implies a supportive, non intervening role (The
History of Midwifery, 2002). Midwifery views labor as a completely normal process, not a surgical event in cases of normal pregnancies (The History of Midwifery, 2002).
A midwife is "a trained professional with special expertise in supporting women to maintain a healthy pregnancy birth, offering expert individualized care, education,
counseling and support to a woman and her newborn throughout the childbearing cycle" (What is a Midwife? 2002). With a description such as this, it hardly seems possible
to have anything negative associated with this profession. And yet, there are definitely two sides (What is a Midwife? 2002).
