2006, p. 26). A hospitals chief executive officer (CEO). In previous eras, the CEO was primarily concerned with activities occurring inside the hospital, that is, tasks that directly impacted
the quality of patient care, such as "bargaining with employees, developing proper benefit packages and determining the best methods and techniques to manage the institution" (Griffin, 2006, p. 38). Today,
CEOs increasingly deal with activities that are less directly related to patient care, which entail factors outside of the hospital itself, such as "strong labor unions, third-party payers
and governmental agencies" (Griffin, 2006, p. 38). The functions of hospital administration and the duties of the CEO specifically are broad based. These include everything from overseeing the maintenance
of the building itself to reviewing performance records and establishing necessary job requirements. The CEO is involved in every aspect of hospital administration by assigning others to certain tasks and
then overseeing and having approval over results prior to implementation. For example, the CEO allocates preparing annual budgets to "the chief financial officer, the director of nurses and the assistant
administrator" (Griffin, 2006, p. 39). These budgets are presented by the CEO to the board of trustees after the CEOs review. As this indicates, the CEOs role includes acting
as a facilitator of human resources, but also encompasses consideration of financial resources. These two roles were selected as most important because they exemplify the ways in which the
CEO, as the head of hospital administration, must balance numerous considerations in order to keep a hospital operating smoothly and efficiently with the resources and personnel that are required. In
