the hospitals performance in this area over time. The purpose here is to demonstrate relationships that lead to that conclusion. Effect on Organizational Performance
In 2007, the number of uninsured Americans increased to about 49 million, but the number of underinsured Americans increased to well more than 25 million, an increase of
60 percent since 2003 (Reinberg, 2008). "Approximately 42 percent of adults aged 19 to 64 years old - 75 million people - were either underinsured or didnt have health
insurance in 2007" (Reinberg, 2008). What this means for hospitals is that increasing numbers of patients entering hospitals are more seriously ill than
in the past, when access to health insurance was less of the elitist privilege it seems to be becoming. In the past, more people could have regular physicals and
screenings, and could be admitted to hospitals for rather routine reasons. Today, many individuals are quite ill when they finally report (or are delivered) to a hospital, many with
diseases and conditions identified as being leading contributors to Mortality Rates for Medical Conditions. The effect on American society is that individuals increasingly
