2002). HF is the most commonly identified Medicare diagnosis-related group, and annual Medicare expenditures are more for HF than for any other diagnosis (Overview, 2002). The HF-l core
measure addresses discharge instructions to HF patients. From the patient perspective, exit interviews can be rather cursory in the attention they give to
the physical condition for which the patient was hospitalized. One of the tenets of advancing nursing practice is that a better-educated patient is both more likely and better able
to provide necessary self-care (Mayo, 1997). From the hospitals vantage, exit interviews provide an opportunity to summarize and expand on instructions for self care. Effect of One Core Performance
Measure on Performance Clinical treatment of HF is markedly different in patients under the age of 18, and so the JCAHO core measure
