But Al Ries and Jack Trout say that this is nonsense: that we arent going to be successful on our own, but need to find other things to help us. This paper discusses their book about how people can market themselves to achieve success. Discussion Like their other works, this book is easy to read and the principles they set forth are clear. Each chapter gives us a different "angle" on how to enjoy a successful career. Chapter 1, Youre Wrong, Norman Vincent: The title is a reference to Norman Vincent Peale, who many years ago wrote the enormously successful and influential book, The Power of Positive Thinking. Ries and Trout say that the many theories "based on believing in yourself or setting goals or whatever ... dont work in real life" (Ries, 2005). Chapter 2, "Hey, Dad, how about $50 million?": Here the authors discuss the idea that intelligence and aggression dont really matter as much as having a rich parent or someone else who can come through with a lot of money when its needed (Ries, 2005). The problem here seems to be that many people are reluctant to ask for money even when they desperately need it, and the people theyre asking have it to give them (Ries, 2005).
