with its bureaucracy and power and ability to run the lives of millions. Many libertarians might agree with the idea that government has too much power. Yet, Hoppe has more
to say than just a bashing of modern representative democracy. Interestingly, while America for example stands for liberty and has done everything it could in its early years to
break free of monarchy, Hoppe thinks it a rather refreshing idea. In fact, he states:" If one must have a state, defined as an agency that exercises a compulsory territorial
monopoly of ultimate decisionmaking (jurisdiction) and of taxation, then it is economically and ethically advantageous to choose monarchy over democracy"(p. XX). Hoppe argues that monarchs are not out for themselves
and will rule for the betterment of society. One is reminded of the famous work The Prince that lays out the best ways for a prince to act. Yet, Hoppe
is not exactly Machiavellian. Still, a great deal of his ideas do go to the fact that politicians are corrupt and that in order to fix the system, it needs
extensive surgery, not a Band-Aid. And while he does make good points in the book regarding the corruption of the modern democratic system, he fails to make the point that
the society would be much better off with a monarch in charge. Of course, one can look at the concept of monarchy historically and also, today, as many western governments
do have republics with monarchy still present such as Canada and the United Kingdom. Even if one likes the idea of royalty, they are largely figureheads now. That is not
what Hoppe is talking about. Not only does the idea appear ludicrous at first glance, it is highly impractical. Monarchy is inextricable with tradition and the tradition to emanate from
