audiences. The following review of each movie summarizes the features of each film and then discusses this point, comparing and contrasting the thematic points in each movie. Hoosiers (1986) With a running time of 114 minutes, the film is set in 1951 and relates the saga of a small Indiana high schools championship season. Norman Dale (Gene Hackman) used to coach college basketball at a prestigious university; however, he ruined his career when he lost his temper so badly that in a burst of anger he hit one of his own players ("Hoosiers"). The film begins ten years later, with Dale weaving his way through tiny little towns and Indiana cornfields. He has a second chance to coach basketball. This time at a tiny rural high school. In the small town of Hickory, Dale finds that his players are undisciplined and consider good basketball to be making a dramatic jump shot from fifteen feet ("Hoosiers"). Dale has his team undertake a series of endurance and agility drills, demanding that they learn to pass before they take a shot. They begin to improve, but Coach Dale finds that whipping an undisciplined group of players into a team, though difficult, is easier to handle than the frustrations of the townspeople when the teams losing streak continues. There is one boy in the high school, Jimmy (Maris Valainis) who is a superb player, with an incredible jump shot. Jimmy refuses to play because he is still mourning for the previous coach, who as close to Jimmy as his own father ("Hoosiers"). Also, he has been encouraged by a young teacher, Myra Fleenor (Barbara Hershey), not to play, but rather to concentrate on his academic studies, as this teacher sees in Jimmy the potential to go beyond high school academically ...
