household name and it features his trademark balance of humor and ghastliness. This paper considers the role of ancestors in the play. Discussion Shepard says that its necessary for people
to honor those who have come before, because failure to do so is a sort of suicide. In his play Buried Child, its difficult to think of ancestors in the
sense of great-grandparents or distant forbears; it makes more sense to think of them as perhaps archetypes of human behavior. If thats the case, more than one critic has suggested
that the strong ritualistic nature of the play ties it directly to things like harvest festivals and the deposing and crowning of a new Corn King. These rites are ancient
and it is this concept of ancestry that works best here. The play is a close examination of a ghastly family in Illinois, the "heartland," a favorite setting of
Shepards. Its here that we expect to find those people who are the "salt of the earth," the solid, no-nonsense farmers that are the bedrock of American society. No such
luck! Dodge, Halie and their sons are as dysfunctional as its possible to imagine, and they have a terrible secret: one of the sons, a hulking half-wit named Tilden, apparently
