to feel safe and also allows people to believe in a greater good perhaps. But, in other ways it seems that dishonesty is the real key that many people have
used to keep a society together, such as is the case in Arthur Millers play "The Crucible." In this particular play many characters are dishonest and it is this dishonesty
that serves to act as a commodity that keeps the town together, through witch trials, as a predictable and rational entity. In other words, honesty destroys this town and many
of its people, demonstrating that honesty, while noble, is not easy and often causes more confusion and conflict than one would believe. Honesty in "The Crucible" The lies
in Millers play serve as the foundation of the entire story. There is the lies the girls come up with so they dont get in trouble for dancing in the
woods. There is the lie that Proctor tells about his sexual affair and there is the lie that Abigail tells because she is angry. It is her lie that essentially
sets all the other lies off and it is her lie that relies on the stable foundation of this town. While it may seem that the lies cause all the
conflict, if the truth were told more chaos would erupt and more confusion that would demand the townspeople look at honesty and truth. The first lie, although instigated by
Abigail, involves the girls and their desire not to get in trouble for dancing naked in the woods. If they had told the truth, if they had been honest, the
people would have been seriously frightened about something they could not explain. This would demand they begin to think more deeply, or it would ensure they became more dysfunctional as
