2). This is a phenomenon that is actually seen in cities throughout the nation. Perhaps the real problem is that generally speaking--within the domestic help area and without--immigrants are not
treated well. The new wave of immigrants is readily apparent as something that is different from what used to be. In the past, waves of immigration were accepted during the
latter part of the nineteenth century and the early part of the twentieth. Each bunch of immigrants would have to make due for awhile and eventually assimilate. They often met
with prejudice and difficulties finding employment, but it seems that eventually, each group would find its niche and things would change. This does not seem to be happening for Californias
Latin immigrant population. There are also other areas of the country where this is the case, but due to the approximately and the high Latino population in California, this has
become a significant problem for home workers. In writing the book, the author points to many problems found and one is that the domestic worker becomes intimately involved with
her clients. That is, when one is caring for children and the elderly perhaps, they become entrenched in their lives. The domestic worker may take care of the home, but
nannies will become perhaps overly involved with the children. The gist of the message that emanates from this work is that domestic workers have to stop acting as if they
are members of the families for which they work. They do tend to become a part of the extended family of the rich or at least upper middle class employers,
