concerns from the perspective of medical sociology and in general. A significant body of the scientific literature suggests that homosexuality is genetic in origin. Most homosexuals, however, go
through a period where they try to suppress their homosexual tendencies as a response to societal views that either an individual is heterosexual or they are deviant. When an
individual does finally admit their homosexuality they are still confronted with a society that has difficulty adjusting to their lifestyle. The medical environment is one reflection of this society.
Because homosexuality introduces certain risk factors homosexuals must take certain precautions. The medical environment, however, is often reluctant to openly acknowledge those risk factors or the precautions that
must be taken. From a medical sociology standpoint we must acknowledge certain fact about homosexuality. First, there are different types of homosexuals
and each presents with specific needs in terms of their medical care. Current estimates are that ten percent of the population is homosexual with possibly even more who are
bisexual (Hunt, 1995). A growing number of transsexuals are evident in the population as well. Despite the obvious differences in physiology and behavior, homosexuality, bisexuality and transsexuality are
often treated similarly by society. By the very nature of these conditions, each must find support and solace in the other when it comes to their interaction with society
as a whole and with the medical arena in particular. Consequently, these groups have banded together for a common fight against the sociological problems they encounter as a result of
their sexual orientation. As individuals develop stronger and stronger ties to their homosexuality, most ultimately open up and acknowledge who they are. It is important to remember, however,
