HOMESCHOOLING: ACHIEVEMENT AND SOCIALIZATION , November, 2001 properly! In 1998, an article in Newsweek stated:
"Home schooling, which was once primarily restricted to religious fundamentalists, is moving into the mainstream. It is legal in every state and may involve as many as 1.5 million children.
Critics raise questions about academic and social issues, but parents maintain these issues are not valid" (Wingert and Kantrowitz, 1998, p. 64). There was a time in the not
too distant past when homeschooling was used almost exclusively by either members of the Religious Right, who wanted to make certain their children were trained according to specific religious doctrine,
or the counter-culture Left, who did not want their children to be involved in the bureaucracy and politics of public education. These people were frowned upon until a legal battle
in 1993 made homeschooling legal. Since that time, homeschooling has moved closer and closer to the mainstream (Lyman, 1998; Wingert and Kantrowitz, 1998). There were approximately 1.5 million
children being schooled at home in 1998. By 2000, there were an estimated 1.7 million children being schooled at home (Beem, 2000). Estimates differ dramatically depending on who is doing
the survey. As an example, a survey conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics suggested that there were 850,000 children on homeschooling. The same survey indicated that 1.7 percent
of students between 5 and 17 were receiving their education at home. Demographically, the study found that 75 percent were white. Household income does not differ appreciably between homeschoolers and
those who attend a formal school. The study did find that parents who were schooling their children at home had higher levels of educational attainment themselves (American School & University,
