is psychological. By addressing a god or goddess, the character is essentially talking to himself in order to sort things out. Whatever their purpose, the relationship between the gods and
goddesses and the plot of The Iliad is complex. The gods are often used to move the story line forward. Achaians have besieged Troy for nine years when, on
a raid to a nearby town, they capture two women: Chryseis, daughter of Chryses, a priest of Apollo and Briseis. Chryseis is given to King Agamemnon and Briseis is given
to Achilles. The priest of Apollo, Chryses, come to the camp and tries to ransom his daughter. Agamemnon refuses. Chryses prays to Apollo to intervene and Apollo answers his prayer.
Thus did he pray, and Apollo heard his prayer. He came down furious from the summits of Olympus, with his bow and his quiver upon his shoulder, and the
arrows rattled on his back with the rage that trembled within him. He sat himself down away from the ships with a face as dark as night, and his silver
