birth of Christ, but the power and influence of Homers works have never been in doubt. The composition of Homers epic poetry, "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey" not only
reflects the times in which they were written, but also provides an intimate look into a culture and people who have long ago disappeared into the annals of world history.
Before considering the specific composition of Homers epics, it is recommended that the student who is writing about this subject first examine the epic poetry genre, which is now credited
with being the Greek masters brainchild. First, the term epic is a Greek derivative of "word," which can be used to describe any type of saying or speech (Epic
Poetry). As authored by Homer, the epic poem came to be known as an extended narrative verse that was structured in dactylic hexameter, which is six feet of a
single long syllable followed by two short syllables (Epic Poetry). Customarily, epic poems feature some type of heroic or majestic theme that allows the poem to celebrate or immortalize
its national culture (Epic Poetry). The distinguishing characteristics of Homers epic poetry compositions are: "It is formulaic, with lots of repeated phrases, lines, or sections. It begins
