helping young people to achieve their goals and dreams. Homer "Sonny" Hickam, Jr. begins his narrative by introducing his readers to his hometown, which is Coalwood, West Virginia. His
father, Homer Hickam, Sr., is the mine superintendent and his familys house is located "just a few hundred yard from the mines entrance, a vertical shaft eight hundred feet deep"
(Hickam 2). One of the people in his hometown who influences Hickam spiritually is Reverend "Little" Richard, so call because of "his resemblance to the soul singer" (Hickam 3). Whenever
Sonny had an extra newspaper, he would leave it at the little wooden African American church over which Reverend Richard presided and they formed a friendship. Hickam recounts how
it enjoyed hearing Bible stories from Rev. Richard, which always entailed a dramatic delivery, which was followed by a question, "How about you, Sonny? Do you know the Lord?" (Hickam
3). Sonny was always honest and admitted that he was not certain of that, to which the Reverend would reply that God would look after him. The sincere faith
of this minister, and "his belief in Gods sense of humor and His fondness for neer-do-wells," inspired Sonny, as this fueled the conviction that, while he was not as
"brave as old Daniel," there was "at least a little hope the Lord could let me scrape by" (Hickam 4). Sonny and his friends are inspired and thrilled when
