is a critical element in healing. The term homeostasis refers to the tendency of life forms to seek a relatively constant state of equilibrium within themselves. This occurs
in regard to a number of physiological aspects ranging from blood sugar regulation to temperature regulation. It also occurs in relation to more esoteric aspects of life. The
process of homeostasis is holistic in nature. Holism, in turn, embodies the concept of healing and homeostasis is a critical element in healing. Homeostasis, therefore, is intimately entwined
with energy flows, touch, and complimentary or alternative therapies (Chang, 2001). These types of therapies result in positive feedback. From a healing
perspective, homeostatis is affected not just by positive feedback such as that generated in actions such as touch but also by negative feedback. Negative feedback forms include stress, illness,
and other factors which put a strain on the body from either a physiological perspective or a psychological perspective. Although some in modern
medicine are skeptical of the legitimacy of these forms of homeostatis and the positive and negative feedbacks that affect it, modern medicine is gradually becoming more receptive to such concepts.
Medicine has shifted from the Cartesian way of viewing illness, injury and disease as components of a machine-like body to one which views illness from not only a biological
perspective but also a psychosociological perspective. This evolution in modern medicine is fortunate given that C artesian philosophy envisions distinct separation
