A 10 page research paper examining some of the problems faced both by homeless veterans and the agencies and individuals trying to provide these veterans with real assistance. In 1994, the number of homeless veterans was estimated to be at more than 250,000. The Vietnam veterans are the first to have had to experience a full-fledged guerilla war and its associated atrocities, and they are the first to been poorly received upon returning home. Many have developed a deep mistrust for any government agency, including the VA that makes a true effort to help them improve their lives, but workers who were formerly homeless veterans themselves have had success in helping some of those currently still homeless. (most of whom had to be drafted to begin with) returned to a climate in which, rather than being honored as all who had passed before them had been, they
were literally and physically spat upon, and labeled "baby killers." Not until the mid-1980s has the nation as a whole "been willing to remember the experience of Vietnam. Memorials
to Vietnam veterans have been built," and "ticker-tape parades to honor Vietnam veterans have been held" (Johannessen 374). We give lip service the horrors these people witnessed, if only
because those horrors are beyond the capabilities of our imaginations. Those of us who personally know Vietnam veterans know "the type." There are some who will discuss it
occasionally and drink whenever possible; there are those who will never discuss their experiences but commonly wake in terror still, nearly 30 years later; and there are those who seem
not to be able to stop talking about it. Background Estimates place the number of homeless veterans at approximately 250,000 (Hall A18). Though veterans only account for 34%
of the general male adult population, approximately 40% of homeless men are veterans. Surprisingly, it appears that homelessness among veterans is not unequivocally related to combat experience. "Rather,
recent studies show that homeless veterans appear less likely to have served in combat than housed veterans" (Homeless Veterans Fact Sheet 4). Additionally, the same research shows that the
