very broad approach to security as it works to bring institutions and organizations together. It is, however, perhaps the Patriot Act of 2001 that has truly brought about powerful controversy
as it often involves spying, tapping, and racial profiling. The following paper examines elements of Homeland Security and the Patriot Act. Homeland Security/Patriot Act Many would argue that
Homeland Security has not really improved the safety of the nation and many would argue that hurricane Katrina is proof of this as the national government failed to help those
in need. Many argue that if the United States could not respond well to the hurricane and its devastating aftermath then it could not respond to a real terrorist attack.
And, in all honesty, there is little chance that one could evaluate the effectiveness of Homeland Security in light of the fact that there has been no terrorist attack since
9/11 and the people have generally only heard warnings or rumors of warnings regarding the possibility of attacks that have passed. As such one cannot truly evaluate the effectiveness of
Homeland Security. In relationship to the Patriot Act there is a great deal of controversy for many people feel it is a clear invasion of privacy and it has
recently become an act that has grown stronger. In looking at, and evaluating, the power or effectiveness of the Patriot Act a story is presented. Jason Halperin (2003) tells of
