means-is a magical place. In our memory, its a place where we were loved and cherished, and belonged. This paper considers the idea of homecoming in Omeros, and whether the
characters in the poem can find a place for themselves in a culture that has been overtaken by imperialism. Discussion Walcotts poem is difficult because he weaves dreams and reality,
ancient Greek myths and legends and modern day characters, white and black and all sorts of opposites together. In the last part of the book, Achille is guided part of
the way by a bust of Homer, and an astute reader will be reminded of Virgil guiding Dante through the Inferno. The poem if full of classical allusions and takes
unexpected twists and turns; at one point, the statue guides him to a small boat, and the analogy of crossing the River Styx to the underworld comes to mind.
St. Lucia is a beautiful Caribbean island that has been exploited by industrialized Britain; but even rampant capitalism has not succeeded in entirely obliterating the islands natural beauty. The question
is how Achille, who is a misfit like the author, can find his way back to a life there. Walcott is of mixed race, and all his life has fought
to understand his culture and find his place in it; its not surprising that his poems speak to his experience and his characters face similar dilemmas. Now Achille, having been
on a fanciful journey to Africa to find his father and through time to ancient Greece, returns to the reality of St. Lucia. Walcotts comments on what the island has
suffered are indirect but powerful. As he first sails into the bay he remembers so well, tourists come to take his picture, obviously entranced with the spectacle of a "native"
