Oxygen therapy is one of the most common services delivered in the home health care environment. The specifics of this therapy, of
course, vary according to the specific patients needs. Indications for oxygen therapy are provided by pulmonary function tests, tests including forced vital capacity and forced expiratory volume, as well
as by blood oxygen content (Wisniewski, 2003). The qualifying values for these tests vary according to the patients specific condition. For advanced COPD, for example, severe and progressive
hypoxemia is defined as "a PaO^sub 2^ of 55 mm Hg or less" (Wisniewski, 2003). In the home environment oxygen can
be delivered either through a mask or through a nasal canula. The goal of oxygen therapy is to stabilize the patients Spo2 at or above 90% (Wisniewski, 2003).
This is typically accomplished for COPD patients by delivering titrated oxygen at two to five liters per minute (Wisniewski, 2003). The goal in most cases is to maintain Spo2
at 90% or above (Wisniewski, 2003). Breath type includes APRV1, Volume, Pressure, TCPL2, and PRVC1 with apnea backup of Volume, Pressure, and TCPL2. The precise level of oxygen
allowed per patient is prescribed by the patients physician. Too much or too little can be counterproductive and result in one or more complications. When too much oxygen
is delivered respiratory drive can be depressed (Wisniewski, 2003). Too little oxygen and optimum Spo2 is not reached. The job of the
respiratory therapist in the home health care environment is to educate the patient as to the proper level of oxygen to use and the correct way to use the machinery
