In 2004, the residents of Pine Brook, N.J., were shocked to learn that Home Depot would acquire an empty 75,000 square foot building.
Residents and city officials alike believed that Home Depot would use the space for an Expo store, given that there were two Home Depot stores already close by. All
observers and speculators were wrong, however, as they learned when Home Depot announced it would open a traditional Home Depot store at the location. Mendelson (2004) noted that when
the third and newest store opened, residents would "be able to drive one mile west to visit an existing Home Depot or go one mile east to shop at the
new Home Depot" (p. 60). One of the existing stores (three miles from another) had not been performing well in the year it had been open at the time,
and even employees were concerned. One mused, "They are just doing this to prevent Lowes from getting into the market ... I am worried that in a year or
so, I will be without a job when my store gets shut down" (Mendelson, 2004; p. 60). At the turn of the century,
