the dresser, the chest of drawers. The furniture is older now, and nicked, but also what would be considered by many to be valuable antiques. This is not my
home, and yet it is. I lower myself onto the old bed. The patchwork quilt is the same one that has been there for as long as
I can remember, but its colors are faded now. For the first time since I was a young child, I will sleep in this bed again. The
bed of my childhood. My aunt used to tuck me in this same bed after a hot bath and some warm milk. Shed wrap the covers around me, and
Id nestle into the sweet-smelling softness of the bed, opening one eye when Grampa would peek into the room. "Go on, go to sleep now," hed say gruffly, his
eyes trying not to twinkle. "Maybe Ill make you some biscuits in the morning." Id nod and squeeze my eyes shut, dreaming of the next morning. Before I
knew it, Id awaken to the sounds of pots and pans clattering in the hallway. I never really stopped to wonder why Grampa was on the opposite end of
the house from the kitchen, or why he seemed to need to carry every cast-iron skillet from the oven into the hallway. That was just his way.
Id leap from the bed, my flannel nightgown falling to my ankles, and shove my feet into my aunts fuzzy slippers. Grampa would peer into the room. "You
