the most significant and heinous tragedies in the history of humanity, Holocaust survivors represent a unique take on the concept of forgiveness; as the population as a whole grows older,
many survivors are experiences role conflict regarding whether they should forgive their past captors and tormentors, or whether such forgiveness would constitute forgetting about an injustice which must never be
repeated. In order to gain a better understanding of the personality-based and circumstantial influences upon forgiveness, a 15-item survey is developed and justified. Introduction The sociological study
of survivors of the Holocaust has revealed over the decades since World War II ended in Europe that the survivors experiences contain a great deal of sociological value. For example,
by studying this particular population, one might be able to glean new understandings about a wide variety of human behaviors and circumstances, particularly those related to the survival and long-term
impact of traumatic events. However, there are certain dimensions of sociological value in the experiences of Holocaust survivors that is immediately obvious. Personality-based and circumstantial factors that influence the survivors
experiences with forgiveness may be studied to gain a deeper understanding of the phenomenon of forgiveness. Holocaust survivors provide an excellent opportunity to study the experience of forgiveness for
various reasons. For example, as the population ages, they are beginning to experience a role conflict in their cultural and personal identification as survivors of one of the centurys greatest
tragedies: the conflict between the role of a compassionate individual who is capable of forgiveness and the role of a historical testament to horrors that should never be repeated (Cohen,
2006). As social workers work with Holocaust survivors, one of the primary responsibilities in coming years will be to help these individuals face and resolve their personal experiences with forgiveness.
