It has always seemed to be the destination of dreamers hoping to become movie stars, and the destination of all who want the beautiful fantasy life of one who lives in California. According to many Hollywood became this icon because of its location regarding its diversity and its climate, which has always been far milder than the East coast of the nation. In Hollywood and the California Dream Lary May examines other reasons why Hollywood became the capital of the movie industry. Hollywood and the California Dream According to May there are many theories that people have come up with as to why Hollywood became the capital of the film industry in the nation. May indicates that climate and diversity in location, with mountains and deserts close by, is the biggest held theory concerning this reality. May also indicates that some argue how, due to its proximity to Mexico people with legal problems could quickly leave the country. May also indicates that some people argue how because it was very far away from the initial film industry it was not so easily controlled by regulations in the industry. However, what May seems to strongly believe is that Hollywood was actually the perfect place for Americans to diverge from Eastern standards of rigid control as they sought a more morally ambiguous path in the development of society. May states, "the modern corporate studios in Los Angeles created an atmosphere where moral experimentation could blossom" (May; 248).
