today. She is not like the typical Hollywood starlet, but yet is presented as an incredibly sexy woman who can perhaps land any role she wants. Hollywood does not necessarily know how to handle this African American woman who is essentially very real and down to earth, but they do their best in presenting her in a light that ensures that the public is mesmerized if only for her beauty and her African American heritage. As the first African American woman to receive an Oscar she is clearly a superstar who seems surrounded by a magic, a sense of the mythical, that Hollywood certainly plays upon. Hollywood and the Real World With Halle Berry one notes that Hollywood may well have felt that the time had come, politically and socially speaking, to offer an African American woman the Oscar. We are all aware that many actors/actresses and films do not receive the recognition they deserve. And the film for which she won the Oscar, "Monsters Ball," was a deep and somewhat disturbing film that was not taken to by much of the American public. Her acting, however, was incredibly powerful and Hollywood perhaps realized that it could not ignore such talent any longer, especially with her upcoming role at the time, that of a Bond girl. With that in mind we see that Hollywood needed to start truly paying attention to her presence, and how they presented her to the world. Interestingly enough, however, much of her private life, though open to the public, is rarely discussed. Instead very trivial focus is played on this complex woman in order to make her seem more magical and allusive.
