discussing what he means by the phrase "beginners mind," which refers to a persons "original attitude towards" something (Suzuki, 2006, p. 21). What Suzuki appears to be referring to is
the way in which what is familiar loses its freshness and a person is inclined, for example, simply to repeat words automatically rather than consider what they really mean. For
example, he is referring to the way you might say the Pledge of Allegiance automatically, without any real thought as to its meaning or purpose. This leads me to
consider the question: What is my beginners mind in regards to nursing? Certainly, I do not want to get to the point where I say the thing automatically, and therefore
without any real meaning, to my patients. I have noticed, as a patient myself, when the doctor comes in and says, "How are you?" my automatic response is to say,
"Fine" because thats the standard reply to this question, just like saying "Youre welcome" in response to "thank you." I can be as a dog and I still automatically say
"Fine." I want to keep my statements and dialogues with my patients real, which is what I believe Suzuki is indicating. However, there is still a great deal about Suzukis
discourse that I find confusing. Philosophy has often struck me as an amorphous subject. Its slippery and refuses to be categorized in tight little categories, as its ideas insist on
oozing over the edge of one category and into another. Understanding philosophy, whether its classical philosophy or religious oriented, strikes me as being similar to trying to push toothpaste back
into the tube. For example, it is difficult to me to understand what Suzuki means by keeping your mind "empty," as he says that "In the beginners mind there is
