and Mario Molina first revealed their theory that the use of chemical chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, proposed a threat to the earths protective stratosphere known as the ozone layer (Environment Canada
http://www.ec.gc.ca/ozone/primer/ozone). There was a considerably less amount of skeptical scoffing eleven years later, in 1985, when this hypothesis was verified by the publicized news of the detection of a
notable hole in the ozone layer above the Antarctic, a hole that traced its formation back to the mid-1970s. By the time Rowland and Molina accepted the Nobel Prize
in Chemistry in 1995, the skeptical scoffing had just about died out (Environment Canada http://www.ec.gc.ca/ozone/ primer/ozone). Today there is no room for skepticism when it comes to the issue of
the depletion of the ozone layer. Years of scientific study and meticulous monitoring have revealed facts that leave no doubt that the precious protective stratosphere we know as the
ozone layer has suffered an immense amount of damage. In November of 1999, a second large hole in the ozone was detected over northern Europe by ERS-2, the remote
monitoring satellite set in place by the European Space Agency (European Space Agencyhttp://subs.esa. int:8330/pressows/documents/news/1/1999/press47.html). This discovery came on the heels of scientific observatory study results that showed that the
Antarctic hole had grown considerably in size and by 1999 encompassed an area equal to double the size of Chinas mainland (U.S. Newswire PG). By the time the world moved
into the twenty-first century, there was absolutely no skeptical scoffing surrounding the issue of ozone layer depletion. II. Opposing Viewpoints Ozone is a highly concentrated form of oxygen that
is made up of three atoms of bound oxygen as compared to the two that compose the oxygen that we breathe. Approximately ninety percent of the globes ozone is
