the past. What remains is a novel of great power and honesty that speaks to teenagers directly, which may be why some parents dislike it so much; Holden Caulfield tells
the kids all the things their parents dont want them to know. This paper discusses Holden Caulfields role as a symbol of teen alienation. Discussion The idea of Holden being
viewed as a symbol of teen angst is neither new nor original; in fact, it can be argued that the entire purpose of his existence is to show people what
a teenagers life is really like. The thing that strikes a reader most forcibly is the way in which his three-day visit to New York City is so unfocused; he
cant settle down to anything but must keep moving. When he does try to connect with someone, he fails. In fact, this theme-his inability to connect-is an important part
of the novel since it is a clear symbol of his alienation. Holdens story is "full of failed attempts to communicate, messages never delivered, uncompleted phone calls, overtures not taken
up, appeals repulsed. William Faulkner, who praised the novel, said that when Holden attempted to enter the human race, there was no human race there" (Sandock). As Holden struggles to
find himself, he goes to various people including his teacher Mr. Spencer and a former teacher, Mr. Antolini, but no one can hear his anguish or respond to him (Sandock).
When Holden fails to get through to anyone, he is both furious and disgusted and decides to run away and stop trying (Sandock). The novel is the story of Holdens
