These negative people also believe that strong laws are necessary to keep order and that people should be severely punished for their untoward acts. This is very different from the
free spirit, or enlightened, individual who sees man as a good being who deserves freedom and to be given the benefit of the doubt. According to information submitted by
a student, regarding Thomas Hobbes thoughts, "life in the state of nature would be solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short." The student ponders: "Why does he think
this, and how persuasive are his arguments?" Before delving into the answer, it pays to explore the question. What would life be like in the state of nature? Because Hobbes
contends that it would be solitary, this suggests that people would have few friends and they are not connected to one another. Life is also short, which can mean a
variety of things. The idea that it is brutish and nasty sets a dismal tone for exploration and poor can go to quality of life or meant literally in respect
to wealth. No matter how one interprets the sentiment, it seems that life is not good according to Thomas Hobbes. The state of nature idea of course suggests that this
is mans inner nature as opposed to a socially constructed phenomenon. For Hobbes, man is somewhat evil. A bit of theory will help in this analysis. Hobbes does have a
