humans living in the BC era. One useful exercise for demonstrating the contemporary practical application of philosophy is to utilize an existing philosophical framework to develop new insights into a
contemporary issue. For example, one might look at a recent social phenomenon such as the riots in Vancouver following the Stanley Cup finals and gain a new understanding of the
causes and nature of those riots by fruitfully applying the works of a philosophical theorist such as Thomas Hobbes. This paragraph helps the student begin to explore the primary theories
of Hobbes and how they relate to the riots. Hobbes primary contributions to philosophy adopt the superficial form of political treatises. However, the arguments contained therein also rely upon a
number of fundamental metaphysical assumptions about the nature of humanity. Hobbes most famous treatise is probably "Leviathan". Written in the late 17th century, the work is famous for contributing to
political discourse the concept of the "social contract" theory. The basic idea is that humanity enters into a "social contract" with one another and with figures of authority in order
to maximize the best interests of each individual. When left without a centralized form of authority to govern and regulate everyday matters, Hobbes contends that the nature state of humanity
is to descend into lawlessness, aggressive competition, and a perpetual state of war. This diminishes the quality of life for everyone, and so it is necessary to submit to a
