If one understands the basic premise that a philosophy is the systematic study relevant to a body of ideas, then it follows that a "political philosophy" would entail
the study of the body of work germane to government. Moreover, because the concepts of government (in order to be effective) have to be "working" concepts, i.e., applicable to
the lives of its citizenry, then the ideologies within the confines of the system of government cannot merely be relegated to armchair discourse. They must work. An effective
system of government must be alive in order to meet the tangible needs of those who are governed. Therefore, a political philosophy also has to be "alive" - less
concerned with ideals, (although originating from them) - and more concerned with what will work in practice. This essay will examine this concept in relation to the postulates of
Thomas Hobbes Leviathan, and John Locke in his Second Treatise on Government (Hobbes and See Also Thomas Hobbes Leviathan 1651, 2001). For a number of reasons, it is both
interesting and fitting that political philosophers, Hobbes and Locke should be considered together. Unquestionably they are two of the greatest philosophers in this field that England has ever produced.
