early thinkers, such as Hobbes and Locke, on human nature and the structure of government, are important in terms both of their historical and philosophical interest and also the way
in which their influences can be seen in modern government, since the concept of human nature is inevitably linked to that of human rights, and hence to the way in
which such rights should be upheld by government. Hobbes considered that the concept which we know as human rights originated with the right of nature. He described this in Leviathan
as the liberty which individuals have to use their own power to preserve their own lives.
This was something which Hobbes saw as derived from the individuals own judgement, rather than imposed externally. In many ways, this could be seen as
amounting to a right of self-defence. Everyone is entitled to protect their own nature, which to Hobbes equated to life, and given that nature could be aggressive in itself, his
philosophy maintained that people have the freedom to take a stand against that which mediates against them, and this is something which is the prerogative of the individual rather than
of society. However, Hobbes is also making the assumption that human beings will able to ascertain what is the correct way of doing this, which attributes a high standard of
judgement and rationality to people. He takes the perspective that by way of their own moral judgement, human beings will be capable not only of defending their liberty and their
lives against the attacks which may be mounted upon them, but they will choose the right course of action in the process.
