In order to understand some of the reasons why Hitler changed his political tactics
and strategies after 1923, it is useful to look at his earlier connection with the party which was to become the Nazi party, and his concept of Germanys history and
potential future. He had joined the German Workers Party in 1919, and three years later had become chairman of what was now the National Socialist German Workers Party, the forerunner
of the Nazis. By this time the party membership had grown considerably, and Hitler had established squads of strong-arm
men who were able to patrol his own meetings and disrupt those of others. These would later become the SA.
Hitler objected strongly to the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, which had been formulated to humiliate Germany and ensure that her military and economic growth would
be severely impeded. It is true that the terms of the treaty were extremely harsh, and perhaps it could have been foreseen that the nation would not, after the initial
demoralisation of her defeat in World War 1, have consented to stay in such a subjugated position with regard to the rest of Europe.
It is interesting to note that after the Second World War, even though determined attempts were made to bring war criminals
to justice and extract reparation, the Allies were at pains to distinguish between the leadership who were responsible for the atrocities and the German people as a whole.
