as Machiavelli rejects traditional notions of good and evil and supports the idea that a leader should use whatever means are at his disposal to gain and hold onto power.
The following discussion first examines the some of the principles outlined by Machiavelli and then argues that Adolf Hitlers rise to power and dictatorial reign in Nazi Germany fits with
Machiavellian prescriptions. In one of the most famous passages from The Prince, Machiavelli argues that it is "safer (for a ruler) to be feared than loved."1 Machiavelli bases this
statement on the observation that while love is a "tie of obligation," it is broken at every turn, while fear, with its specter of punishment, "never relaxes its grasp."2 As
these injunctions indicate, Machiavelli rejected the idea that a ruler should be the embodiment of high ideals. Rather, Machiavelli argued that a ruler should take whatever action was most expedient
to his personal goals. These Machiavellian principles can be seen reflected in the reign of Hitlers Third Reich. When Hitler and the Nazis came into power, they suspended the
powers of regular government, created new power for themselves and set about destroying the institutions that dared to oppose them. Hitler was the quintessential opportunist, who epitomized Machiavellian ideals, as
he went about pursuing his own objectives to the detriment of the German people.3 However, in analyzing Hitlers rule over Germany in Machiavellian terms, it should also be noted
where his actions fit with the subtler injunctions of Machiavelli, who also warns that a ruler should "inspire fear in such a fashion that if he do not win
love he may escape hate."4 Machiavelli felt that this could be accomplished as long as a ruler did not "meddle with the property or with the women of his citizens."5
