the road with a thumb stuck out to signal passing drivers that one wants a ride. It used to be fairly common but has been out of favor for many
years, at least in the United States. Hitchhiking in Europe is still a usual practice. Of course there are a number of horror stories about the hitchhikers who have been
picked up and subsequently attack and/or killed by the drivers, but it seems that the numbers are actually much smaller than the reports would lead us to believe. The
question arises, who hitches? "Those who need to, the poor, the young, the lost, whoever it is that cant use the public transport system" (Wechner, 1996). Or, increasingly, those who
just "love to hitch" (Wechner, 1996). There are two primary motives for hitchhiking, according to Wechner, economic and social (1996). Its a very economical way to travel because it doesnt
cost anything, at least not monetarily; the cost comes in the form of a "slow and tiring journey," a long wait between rides, and the fact that a hiker might
be let off to wait for another ride in some deserted spot (Wechner, 1996). However, there is a social aspect to hitching: its sharing "and it brings travelers together" (Wechner,
1996). Wechner enjoys hitchhiking and sees it as a way to have fun; he suggests, though, that hikers exercise common sense when they hitch. Like Wechner, Steve Gillman likes hitching
and has done a lot of it. As for the pros and cons, he writes: "Pro: cheap. Con: dangerous. Its convenient, but unpredictable. No car repair hassles, but the hassle
