briefly intrigued by what seems to be a chance encounter with another man, Bruno, who turns out to be a psychotic killer. While murder, suspense and plot complications are the principal focus of the film, the interplay and contrast between Guy and Bruno add a psychological depth to this film that makes it truly fascinating study in human behavior. As this thesis statement illustrates, this writer/tutor did not find anything in the film to suggest that either Bruno or Guy are of ethnic origin. While the name "Bruno" has an Old World ring to it, this is not stressed in the film. However, the student researching this topic is encouraged to explore this topic from his/her own perspective when writing a personal essay drawn from this research. Guy Haines is a famous tennis pro. From the beginning of the film, Hitchcock emphasizes the contrasts between the two men. As each man enters the train, the view is from the waist down, which subtly transmits a sexual innuendo. Guy wears conservative black shoes, while Brunos shoes are a flashy black-and-white. Guy accidentally collides with Brunos feet when crossing his legs as they sit across from each other and Bruno recognizes him as a famous tennis star. While this seems like an accidental meeting, as they have lunch in Guys private compartment, Bruno makes comments that reveal that he has detailed knowledge of Guys personal life. As Roger Ebert points out in his review, Brunos manner is "pushy and insinuating, with homoerotic undertones" (Ebert). Despite being offended, Guy fails to break off the conversation.
