the best restored missions and truly gives the visitor a look back into the past. The following paper examines the history of the La Purisima Mission. History of
the La Purisima Mission In understanding the history of the La Purisima Mission it is perhaps important to begin with the history of missions in California in general. The missions
were essentially started as a way for the Spanish to take some control over a region of California, El Camino Real, that proved to be difficult terrain along the coast
(The Lewis and Clark Journey of Discovery). The region stretched form San Diego to San Francisco (The Lewis and Clark Journey of Discovery). The purpose was primarily to put a
foothold for Spain on the California coast since the Russians had already taken parts of the California coast for fur trapping, down to their Fort Ross which was established in
1812 just 80 miles north of San Francisco (The Lewis and Clark Journey of Discovery). It was believed that establishing missions,
each located a "stiff days march" (about 30 miles apart) from one another (The Lewis and Clark Journey of Discovery). The region, prior to the establishment of the missions, had
been barely explored and in establishing the missions Spain laid claim (The Lewis and Clark Journey of Discovery). By the end of the construction of the missions there were 21
missions on the chain, different from the 14 missions that had been established by the Jesuit priest Father Kino around the Baja coast (The Lewis and Clark Journey of Discovery).
