and religious norms. However, originally, there was no specific type dress or gown a bride felt compelled to wear (History of Wedding Dresses, 2007). She would dress in
the finest attire she owned to signify the importance of the occasion. The grand classical civilizations of Greece and Rome defined the wedding dress as a cultural statement.
Greek bridal dresses celebrated beauty and affluence with long squares of cloth known as peplos and decorative gold clasps (History of Wedding Dresses, 2007). The wealthier the family, the
more elegant the dresss clasps (History of Wedding Dresses, 2007). Roman wedding dresses, in contrast, were more religious and conservative, and featured symbolic references to Juno (the marriage and
maternity God) (History of Wedding Dresses, 2007). There was no universal or standard style or color. Some Gothic cultures preferred muted earth tones; but in ancient Russia, red
was a popular color for the wedding sundress for it signified beauty and joy (History of Wedding Dresses, 2007). During the Medieval period, weddings resembled pagan festivals and most of
then involved the celebration of spring (important planting season for these agricultural societies) (Bradley & Johnson, 2003). This is likely when the concept of the June Bride originated.
