It is also a bread that has a good deal of sweetness to it. It sometimes has a texture that sees it easily crumble, but other recipes provide a sturdier
result. The taste is somewhat like corn as cornmeal is its primary ingredient. Obviously, the corn meal used is derived from the vegetable, corn, which is grown in fields.
Corn is considered to be a new world food (Olver, 2009). It is something that the Native Americans would use in their cooking before the Europeans came to the North
American continent (Olver, 2009). Still, the corn bread that is generally consumed in America today is associated with a European or English heritage (Olver, 2009). This is largely because the
settlers in the new world had to use corn meal rather than other flour types that were not plentiful (Olver, 2009). At the time, there was a demand for bread,
but a short supply of ingredients. Corn was plentiful and so the settlers used corn meal to bake. Hence, breads and products made with cornmeal were termed "Indian bread" or
"Indian pudding" largely because one of the ingredients was cornmeal (Olver, 2009). The terms also differentiated the bread from what the settlers had been used to before the came to
the new world. Cornbread started out as an Indian food but soon became a staple for the European settlers. According to Mariani (1999, as cited in Olver, 2009) the corn
bread did help the settlers survive the harsh early winters and while it had various names at first such as corn pone, it would later simply be called cornbread. Today,
