city. The following paper examines the history of the city and discusses what the future seems to hold for Des Moines. Research the history and development of an
Iowa town. Who settled there and why? What were the major transformations to this community? What does the future hold for this community? History of Des Moines,
Iowa As mentioned, the history of Des Moines appears to begin in 1834. However, many native tribes had existed in this region for
many generations. One author notes that, "Many Indians possessed and traded European manufactured goods long before they ever set eyes on a French explorer, and the historic period for them
began before actual contact" (Merry, 1996). And, as was the case with much of the nation, a great deal of turmoil existed, for more than hundred years, between natives and
the Europeans who were descending into the area (Merry, 1996). But, for the purposes of the city and its history, the beginning is generally marked as being 1834.
It was during this year that "John Dougherty, an Indian Agent at Fort Leavenworth, Ks, recommended that a military post be established at the
point where the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers merge" (The City of Des Moines, 2007). In 1843, 9 years after the initial establishment, Captain James Allen, along with a company
from Fort Sanford, came to the location and Allen suggested that they name the fort Fort Raccoon (The City of Des Moines, 2007). However, the War Department stated that they
